How Seeding Works in Esports Tournaments

Seeding ranks the teams before a bracket is drawn so the strongest teams meet as late as possible: the 1 seed plays the lowest seed, the 2 seed plays the second lowest, and so on. Good seeding makes early rounds fairer and finals stronger. You can seed by hand, by rank, by past results, by skill tiers or at random.

How a seeded bracket is laid out

In a 16 team bracket, round one is 1 vs 16, 8 vs 9, 5 vs 12, 4 vs 13, 3 vs 14, 6 vs 11, 7 vs 10 and 2 vs 15. If every higher seed wins, the semifinals are 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3. When the number of teams is not a power of two, the top seeds get byes into round two.

In a Swiss stage, seeds set the first round (top half against bottom half) and break ties at the end.

Ways to seed

Nameless Arena supports several seeding methods, and you can mix them by pinning teams you have placed by hand.

  • By hand: drag teams into order
  • Registration order: first to sign up, first seed
  • Random: a fair draw when you know nothing about the teams
  • Rating: the average rank of each roster, from players' linked game accounts
  • Results: each team's best previous finish
  • Tiers: skill tiers you assign (tier 1 is strongest), useful when you know the scene

Pinning and seed protection

Pin a team to lock its seed, so a reshuffle or an automatic method leaves it in place. Seed protection keeps teams from the same school or organization apart in round one, can keep teams from the same tier apart too, and respects any pairs you block yourself (for example two teams that share players). It swaps teams only within a band of similar seeds, so the bracket stays balanced, and it tells you if a conflict could not be avoided.

You can also paste or upload a seed list, with an optional tier column, which helps when you seed from a spreadsheet or another platform.

When seeding is locked

You can change seeds until the first match of the stage starts. Changing seeds after the bracket is generated re-slots the teams. Once a match has started, seeding is locked so results already played stay valid.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the 1 seed play the lowest seed?
So the two strongest teams can only meet in the final, and every top seed is rewarded with the easiest first match. It keeps the bracket balanced and the late rounds competitive.
What is the fairest way to seed an open tournament?
Use any real signal you have: past results or verified ranks. If you have none, a random draw is fairer than registration order, which rewards whoever signed up first.
What are byes?
When the field is not a power of two, some first round slots are empty. The top seeds take those empty slots and go straight to round two.
Can teams from the same club be kept apart?
Yes. Seed protection keeps teams from the same school or organization out of each other's first match, and you can block specific pairs yourself.
